The Marriage Ministry seeks to provide mentoring for couples in three major areas: seriously dating couples, engaged couples, and married couples seeking to strengthen or repair their relationships.
Mark 10:6-10
“But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother to be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
Marriage Mentoring
Typical mentoring consists of 10-15 hours spent with each couple over 5-10 sessions. This mentoring program is required for all couples planning to be married at Atonement.
Mentor couples are trained to use two different evaluative instruments in the mentoring process: the “Prepare Inventory” and the “FOCCUS Pre-Marriage Inventory.” Additionally, mentor couples are trained in the “REFOCCUS Marriage Enrichment Inventory,” a self-administered program for already-married couples. All mentor couples have been married for at least fifteen years. Along with their personal experience and training, mentors may use Christian books, videos, and other sources to meet the needs of the couples they mentor.
Sunday School Program
Atonement emphasizes strengthening marriages within our church through the Sunday School program. Marriage Ministry team members, as well as other volunteers, share candidly about their marriage experiences and how the Lord has taught them and led them. These classes also focus on various books on marriage as guides for study and conversation.
Let us know your marriage date! Each month, we list the couples married in that month in Atonement Life, so that the congregation can celebrate with them. In addition, we publish a monthly “Marriage Minute” in Atonement Life. This is a one-page publication that offers marital advice and encouragement.
Marriage Ministry books, tapes, and videos are available in the Atonement Library on the ground floor. Our resources there cover a variety of marriage and family issues. These will be profiled occasionally in the Atonement Life bulletin; however, it is important to note that a wide range of books is available serving the needs of young couples with children, blended families, retirees, and many others, so please make the time to check them out!
