Music is a vital part of our church life. The weekly activities of the Music and Worship Ministry involve close to a hundred individuals who work faithfully to prepare songs, hymns, and anthems for Sunday morning services. Over the year, we present a handful of concerts and hold events like talent shows and coffee houses. Our regular ensembles include the Atonement Choir, the Youth Choir, the 'Praisemeisters' (our children's choir), the Handbell Choir, and the Atonement Band.
For many years, our church has valued and enjoyed the great variety of music that God has given us for worship. We are committed to a blended style of musical worship that involves traditional hymns, modern hymns, and contemporary praise songs. In addition to accompanying the hymns, our experienced organist provides prelude and postlude music as well as improvisational offerings during the Lord's Supper.
The Atonement Band leads the contemporary music. It is a group of novice, amateur, and professional musicians (flute, recorder, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, double bass, guitar, piano, electric bass, drums, percussion, vocals, and more!). This small chamber orchestra plays contemporary standards, accompanies and collaborates with our choirs, and frequently presents newly composed and arranged music.
Perhaps one of the more unique aspects of music at Atonement is its homegrown nature. For the last two decades, we have enjoyed the musical creativity of many of our own members - songwriters and musicians like Keri Jacobs, Diane Young, and Luke Link. Their body of work makes up a portion of our regularly sung congregational music. This is God's blessing to our church and also an active decision to continue in the true tradition of Reformed Christian music: songs written not by celebrities or institutions, but by normal Christians to be sung by normal Christians for God's glory.
This ministry is for everyone - novices, amateurs, and professionals alike. Simply put, we are a community of music lovers and worshippers. To be involved, all you really need is an appreciation of music, a heartfelt love for the Lord, and a willingness to work and serve.
