The Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) Church
Church of the Atonement was planted in 1947 as part of the United Presbyterian Church. In 1981 we joined the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, also known as the ARP. The decision to find a new denominational home was due to Atonement’s commitment to biblical orthodoxy and in particular to the doctrine of the Trinity. For us, this commitment is grounded in the most fundamental commitment of all, which is to Christ and the truth of the Bible.
The ARP is one of the oldest denominations in North America. The terms “Associate” and “Reformed” in our name reflect our history. The ARP is the result of a union in 1782, between two groups of churches that came from Scotland to the Colonies for the sake of religious freedom.
The “Associate Presbyterians” were distinguished by their zeal for proclaiming the free offer of the Gospel of salvation to all people and the necessity of repentance and personal faith in Christ. The “Reformed Presbyterians,” also called 'Covenanters,' were renowned for their strong faith which was tested by terrible sufferings at the hands of the antagonistic British monarchy in the late 17th century. This is a history of faith, evangelism, and commitment to truth that we want to be a part of.
We enjoy strong fellowship with sister denominations and esteem their institutions. At the same time, we find value in the camaraderie and fellowship of the ARP.
